They add up to a decent investment and you want your money to be well spent for years to come, so don’t end up with a car that will leave you at risk! Here are the top 3 brands to shop for when it comes to safety according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS):

  • 1. Toyota

  • 2. Lexus

  • 3. Nissan

There are two rating categories used by the IIHS when ranking vehicles in terms of safety performance: Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick +
“To qualify for 2017 TOP SAFETY PICK, a vehicle must earn good ratings in five crashworthiness tests — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints — as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.
To qualify for 2017 TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the five crashworthiness tests, an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable or good headlight rating.” – IIHS

Toyota

With 6 models in the top + category and a total of 8 models making the list, Toyota makes safety a priority. By including Enhanced Vehicle Stability (VSC) and Traction Controls (TRAC), 4 wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop Technology (SST) standard across all makes it is easy to see Toyota made the Top Safety Pick + list 6 times. The Camry, Prius, Rav4, and Corolla all made the Top + list with the Yaris iA and Avalon rounding out the first category.

Lexus

Close behind Toyota, Lexus comes in second for safest brand with an impressive 5 models making the list, 4 of which reached the Top + category. With Roadside Assistance (free for 1 year), Smart Stop Technology (SST), Backup Camera, Panoramic View Monitor, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), and Rigid Body Structure with crumple zones standard on most models, and a variety of all weather stability features optional, Lexus is a good overall safety brand. Models on the + list include the Lexus ES 350, RC, RX, NX and the CT 200h made the first category as well.

Nissan

Coming in third, with 3 Top + models and 3 Top Safety Picks, Nissan provides several standard safety features, with a variety of optional additions including Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Predictive Forward Collision Warning, and Forward Emergency Braking. Although those features don’t come standard, Nissan still packs a lot of safety features that are, including Vehicle Dynamic Control, Traction Control Systems, Hood-buckling creases to absorb impact, and zone body construction. Top models include the Nissan Maxima, Altima, and Rouge, and the Sentra, Murano, and Pathfinder falling into the first category.
